I'm going to be traveling quite a bit by bus, train and ferry starting December 24th.
How far in advance should I be booking all my transportation? Do buses, ferries and trains fill up frequently?
Here's my route
Chang Mai -> BKK -> Ko Phagnan -> Ko Tao -> Ko Phi Phi -> Ko Muk -> Malaysia

I'd book your train legs -- especially if they are night trains, as soon as you arrive in Thailand. Buses, less need to book as there tend to be more departures daily. Ferries, well no such thing as a full ferry in Thailand -- or not in my experience anyway -- so no need to book.
Hope that helps
