Safe/reliable land transportation

I'm looking to travel from Phuket airport to Surat Thani and eventually Ko Samui/Pha Ngan. Unfortunately my time is limited and I may only have one night to spend on either Samui or Pha Ngan as I fly out of Phuket and need to get back there within about 48 hours.

Does anyone know of any bus/train routes or other methods of transport other than by air from either Phuket or Krabi to Surat Thani and back? I'm guessing that it would be the easiest just to catch a catamaran from Surat Thani to the islands, but if you have any other suggestions, please do let me know.

Cheers! All of your comments are well appreciated!

    Hi Yana,

You're looking at the best part of a full day of travel to get from Phuket to Samui/Pha Ngan and another full day back again.

Fastest would be bus from Phuket/Krabi town to Surat then transfer to the pier for boat to Samui/Pha Ngan.

Bangkok Airways does fly the route -- if you're only going to be on the island for one night, that would be the way I'd do it -- though, to be honest, unless you have to visit those islands, I'd stick to the west coast and do an overnighter on ko Phi Phi instead...
