planning on spending new year in chiang mai - once the festivities are done with we will be heading to Laos. Here I have a few questions and was wondering if one of you kind souls could help...
firstly should we book in advance in chiang mai for new year - i.e is it largley celebrated?
is it best to fly into laos or cross by land?
i will be starting at the top- i think Luang Prabang and ending in Vientienne does the flow of travellers mainly do it the other way round?
1) To book or not to book
If you've got your heart set on somewhere special, then I would definetly be looking into making a reservation -- not just for Chiang Mai, but anywhere in the country -- it's looking like a very bust silly season and we're seeing a lot of stuff filling up already. However, that said, if you're happy with any old guesthouse and don't mind doing a bit of tramping around to find a room, then you should be fine.
2) Totally depends on how much time you have. If you're short of time I'd fly to Luang Prabang, if you've got time, head north to Chiang Khong, cross over to Huay Xai and take the slowboat down to Luang Prabang.
3) Flow of travellers -- 50/50 going one way or the other.
4) Other tips - take a look at exacto's Trip Reports on his time in Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang -- loads of good info in them -- you can see them in the Trip Reports section.

Hi Michelle,
1) To book or not to book

You can see a full list of the properties that can be booked online through our reservation partner here (at the bottom of the page.

More questions - ask away!
