I would be travelling from Chiang Mai to Bangkok on the night of 12 Oct. Arriving BKK around 11.25 PM by Air Asia flight. I would be taking the next morning 07:00 AM Air Asia flight to Phnom Penh. I have no idea about the New Airport. Since I have only 5-6 hours to spend, is it ok to stay at the Airport Lounge? I would be travelling with my wife and 7 year old son.

I can't see why not, as you'll need to check in 1.5 hours before departure and as there's been a few luggage hassles at the new airport you're probably wise to leave yourself a larger margin of error.
Having not seen the new airport yet, I'm not sure what the standard of the facilities are at this stage.

Two days agao a fellow staying at my hostel had his suitcase stolen while in the airport washroom. He took it into the stall with him and while he was there someone reached under, grabbed it and ran.
So, be cautious as always.
