I will be traveling in Thailand and Vietnam from about Xmas through mid-Januray, with plans of going to Bangkok, Kanchanburi, and Ko Chang in Thailand and hanoi, Halong Bay, and Sapa in Vietnam. I know that will be a busier time since it is over the holidays-- how much do I need to book ahead? I'd rather play it by ear when I get over there, but I don't want to be left without accomodation!

Already picked this one up on your other question -- the general rule is if you have your heart set on a particular spot, and that place takes reservtaions online, then book it. Otherwise, just play it by ear-- the majority of places in the region cannot be booked online.
