Trip Schedule...any suggestions on islands?

Posted by kolibri2322 on 7/10/2006 at 22:53

Hey guys,
Ok, so we think we have worked out the trip schedule and the route so far. Bangkok, Ayutthaya (if we have time), Chaing Mai, Chiang Rai... The only problem we are having is picking an island to spend a couple of days on. We are not really into the party scene, so we just want to relax and enjoy the beauty of an island and the people. Thoughts so far on islands are these: Ko Yao Noi and Ko Yao Yai, Ko Chang "the little one", Ko Lanta, Ko Libong, Ko Adang, and Ko Kut. Decisions, Decisions. If anyone has any preferences or ideas as to which one would be a great stop we would appreciate it. Thanks so much.
Also, is it best/cheaper to go back to Bangkok from Chiang Mai and then on to an island destination?

The easy question first: heading from CM to the islands will almost invariably take you through Bangkok.

Re your island dilemma, I'm asuming you're familiar with our weather map, as some of the isalnds you list (Ko Libong, Ko Libong and Ko Chang (the little one) are all on serious go-slows (or closed) during the Andaman Sea wet season.

Of the ones you list, Ko Lanta, Ko Chang (little one) and Ko Kut are the most heavily touristed, but really only Ko Lanta is heavily developed (relatively speaking)

If you're only looking for a couple of day break, you need to consider how long it will take you to get to the island. Ko Adang is seriously out of the way, you'd need to fly to Trang or Hat Yai, bus to Satun, songtheaw to the port then boat to the island. Ko Yao Yai and Noi likewise you'll need to jet to Phuket or Krabi then grab the boat.

Libong is a beautiful island, but the beach sand is very dark (verging on black) and a lot of people don't realise that before they get there... it is LOVELY though.

Probably not really helping your decision-making here! If it was me and I had three days and didn't want to stay at an island closer to Bangkok (eg Ko Mun Nork or Ko Samet), I would most likely go for either Ko Libong because it is soooo low key, or one of the two Ko Yao islands, as there are stacs of 100% undeveloped beaches there and it is still very unadulterated by tourism...

Hope that helps!

Hey thanks a lot!
That helps us narrow it down a good bit. Alas, it is between Ko Libong and Ko Yao Noi I believe! :) Again appreciate all info somtam.

go to kho pang yang or koa tao.. they are nice and at least you can have a bit of a party.. but they are quite a trek..
