Hi everyone,
First post on this site, superb resource for planning my trip to Thailand next March!
Just wanted to throw a question out there for any Koh Maak visitors. How severe is the problem of Sandflies on the beaches there? If there are issues, what's the best advice for minimising exposure?
I'm currently deciding on whether to visit this island or travel alot further to spend a few days on Ko Sukorn off Trang, the two islands look fantastic and seem relatively quiet in their different ways.
I have never thought they were much of an issue, and that's after about 10 visits to Koh Mak over the years. It's a pretty subjective thing. What is a non-issue for some people is a serious problem for others. I've never come across sand flea concerns there except on sites like this. I've noticed them, but never been bothered enough to stop going back.
It is a pretty quiet place. The boat trip there is excellent. You'll arrive just in time for sunset.
Welcome to Travelfish - and glad to hear you like the site - thanks!
The sandflies can be pretty bad on Ko Maak -- the last two researchers who've been through there both commented on them being bad. They tend to leve me alone, so I can't comment on them myself.
Sukorn is great -- and as far as I know - no sandflies ;-)
