We will be arriving at the new airport at 4:05PM from Cambodia and wish to take the overnight first class train which departs at either 6:00PM or 7:35PM to Chiang Mai the same day.
[1] Which train station should we book our tickets from [Don Muang or Hualamphong], and how long do you think it will take to get to the train station from the new Suvarnahumbi airport [i.e., will we make it on time?]
[2] We plan to take the train on November 3rd. Should we book tickets now, or can we wait until we arrive in Thailand October 26th?
Thank you!

Hi etsai026,
Welcome to Travelfish!
You may get the 7:35pm, but I'd say highly unlikely for the 6pm. Arriving at 1.05pm from Cambodia, so you'll need to clear customs etc -- lets say your out of the airport by 5pm -- which puts you on the road spot on the run-up to peak hour. That said, unless trafic is in melt-down mode you should get to Hualamphong for 7.30
I'd book the train from Hualamphong rather than Don Muang.
October 26th should be ok -- but there's no guarantees! I guess if you leave it till the 26th and trains are full you can always go up o te day train the next day, or else get a night bus.
Another thought -- perhaps look into flying to Chiang Mai on a flight connecting with your AirAsia flight -- saves you messing around with the trains and you're in Chiang Mai same night that way -- Nok Air are great and pretty cheap -- as is Air Asia + the earlier you buy the ticket the cheaper it is.
Hope that helps
