yues thanks somtyam i have already read that.
to be honest you may all be sick to death of all my threads asking a million and one questions - as i guess by the lack of replies that i get! :(
anyway i always pretty much exhaust all avenues before making thread asking these quesstions,if you take a look aroung you will find 5 or 6 or even more other travel forums with me on there asking identical questions.
before i do this i use google and other search tools to the best of my knowledge to try to find out info,so i am not actually lkazy as i think many of you presume.
like i say many times....any help/advice/info much apprreciated,thanks
:)
AMEN :D

cedee, the reason I didn't reply to earlier questions was that I know you have asked a heap both on various travel sites and by PM and there is not too much I can add. Except Ngai is one nice island with good snorkelling, and quite a wide variety of accommodation. And not over busy. When I return I'm going to stay at the out of the way south-west beach which has only one place - Paradise by name from memory, a budget joint.

I just came back from Koh Ngai two days ago. I had spent the good part of a week on Koh Kradan, Koh Muk and lastly, Koh Ngai.
I loved Koh Kradan - definitely my favourite. Koh Muk was also nice, but tempered by some bad news from home that made it difficult to enjoy it. Lastly I went to Koh Ngai.
I had prebooked my accommodation (and paid a deposit) for 3 nights. I was looking forward to Koh Ngai last as it was supposedly a bit more developed than the other two. After a lovely week of solitude, I was looking forward to some busy-ness. It wasn't until I was on the boat on the way to Koh Ngai that I re-read the TF review about my booked resort, when I realised I had missed the words 'secluded beach'!! Blast it, that wasn't what I was looking for.
Never mind, I carried on to Paradise Bungalows on Koh Ngai. It was definitely a secluded beach. There was only the one resort there. It was mostly (if not all) European couples and families, who mostly communicated in their own language (naturally). High tide was in the middle of the night which meant low tide was during the day. It also meant that snorkelling at this particular beach was near impossible during the day as the water only just covered the coral.
I ended up staying one night only and headed back to Trang.
The point I want to make is just be aware of what type of experience you want, and choose your accommodation accordingly. If I had landed here at the start of my 10-day island hopping adventure it would have been fine. But because of the space that I was in, I wanted a bit more happening around me. And it wasn't worth staying for the snorkelling due to the tides at the time I was there.
Personally though, I would have to say Koh Kradan was the best of the three (from what I saw). Koh Kradan is also very quiet (aside from a few nuisance daytripping boats that arrive), it has a gorgeous beach, and fantastic snorkelling down at the far southern end. (Walk 200-300m past the National Park headquarters place).
Hope this helps!

thanks again tezza im still yet to reply to your last pm you sent me on thorntree....sorry!
and busylizzy your post was very helpful, thanks.
to be honest im not too fussed about snorkelling (although i do enjoy it a bit) im more interested in clean beaches ideal for swimming, prefer quieter, uncrowded beaches.
kradan/lipe definately on the menu, and then possibly ngai and then by this time i may be bored of being a beach bum (all depends on my frame of mind at the time,as in the past ive loved 4 or 5 days of just being alone, lounging on the beach and swimming in the sea all day and then just eating in the evening and going to bed early)but then other times being in a secluded/quiet place with nothing to do other than lounge/swim has driven me to near insanity and ive ended up craving the commercialism/hedonism of phuket or bangkok!
so as an in between im thinking possibly lanta/railay,before heading back to bankok and onto ko samet...but like i say it all depends on my mood at the time. (makes me sound like im a right nutter!)
anyway if you want, read this crazily written, congested thread i posted (link below) to give you some sort of ideas of what im looking for.(and possibly make you begin to think i am actually crazy??!!) :-P

Lizz - thanks for your input. Next visit to Ngai I'm aiming for Paradise Resort (have visited but only for some snorkelling and a beer/meal - looked real nice).
But following your post, I'll make sure I land with high tide roughly mid-day.

Koh Kradan was fine for swimming at low tide, but you need to walk toward the southern end of the beach. I was swimming by the path that leads to Lost Paradise bungalows.
Koh Ngai - the beach at Paradise Resort was not good at low tide. Can't comment about other beaches on Koh Ngai (or Lipe).
