Hi
We are arriving in Bangkok at 18:40 in 2 weeks and need to get down South to Surat Thani that night. The only train I can find that we could catch would be the Train Number 39 (SPECIAL EXPRESS)that leaves at 22:50.
This train has no sleeping Berths just 2nd class AC reclining seats.
Has anyone done this trip? Would it be possible to get some sleep in these reclining seats ?

I've never done the trip but it would depend on how tired you are.If you've just had a 12 hour flight, plus the 4 hours to get across Bangkok, you may manage 3 or 4 hours. The Thai train system is fairly old, in need of much maintenance and is therefore reasonably uncomfortable. They often breakdown.Better to spend the night in BKK and travel fresh the next day.

I agree with Tilapia that the train trip would be a difficult follow on to the long flight to Bangkok. Have you looked into other options such as flying to Surat Thani the next morning on Thai or Air Asia? If you caught an early flight, you'd be arriving in Surat at more or less the same time in the a.m., as well as have a better chance to get some sleep that night at a hotel near the BKK airport. Regards.
