I am beginning to plan a 2.5 month trip to SE Asia starting in June. I know weather patterns in El Nino years are relatively unknown, but I did read somewhere that areas 10-15 degrees north and south of the equator (SE Asia) tend to experience droughts. Anyone know if I may possibly dodge a bullet this summer?

Thailand is already experiencing a drought. By June we should be raining again.

Northern Laos also is experiencing a drought. River tourism travel on the Mekong up here has all but stopped I've heard. Only some speed boats are going but much slower. Afternoon temperature in Hongsa, Laos was 34C/94F yesterday, much warmer than usual.

There is a severe drought in Thailand at this time. This has impacted badly on the Mekong but more of a problem are the dams being built upstream by the Chinese. The Thai Prime Minister is seeking a meeting with Chinese officials to discuss the issue.

The Mekong is suffering some of the lowest water levels in decades at present, which has curtailed river transport and the livelihoods of thousands of those who rely on the Mekong downstream. Big news for those involved. Read one of many reports on http://www.mrcmekong.org/MRC_news/press10/drought-condition26-2-10.htm and see the Mekong River Commission site on http://www.mrcmekong.org. Oh yeah China isn't a member of the MRC.

That's strange^ it's 36c/99f here in Chiang Mai. Hotter than bleep just 270km away. Also very hazy with particulate air pollution above safe levels (http://www.pcd.go.th/AirQuality/Regional/Graph/QueryGraph.cfm?task=graphsite)
