howdy there. Me and some friends are planning on heading to ko phangan for a week or so early january hoping to catch a full moon party and have a good ol knees up for the week we are together. Anyone got any good tips on which beach is the nicest and i suppose closest to haad rin? any great experiences with accomodations. Plus how realistic is it to think i will get a sleeper train from chiang mai to surat thani in one sitting?
The most important thing is pretty much every beach on the island arranges transport to Haad Rin on the night of the party, so there's little need to stay close by (unless you want to).
If you do want to stay close, Haad Saikantang is LOVELY, but if you're happy to be further away, Thong Nai Pan Noi is one of the most stunning beaches on the island and I've still got a soft spot for Haad Salad -- despite the development there.

we just spent a couple of nights at Had Salas and its lovely. Tiny and very secluded (though it was 'low season' when we were there); we chose the west coast for the sunsets (a couple of which were magnificent); otherwise most people tend to say what most people tend to say- that Thong Nai Pan is the best beach!

Hi Michelle,
Easy question first. You'll be changing trains at Bangkok.
Now for the tough question.
If you haven't already, give our feature about "What is a good beach on Ko Pha Ngan a read.
The most important thing is pretty much every beach on the island arranges transport to Haad Rin on the night of the party, so there's little need to stay close by (unless you want to).

Should be enough there to get you started!
Hope that helps
