I just stayed at 4T Guesthouse in the newtown of Sukhothai and was thrilled with it. 4T is set among gardens with very clean and comfortable rooms ranging in price from 300-600 baht depending on bed configuration and fan/ac, the more expensive have a balcony out front with table and chairs too. The little restaurant is a hive of activity with good food served quickly and the atmosphere is great. There is also a small pool in the complex which is great after a long ride to the historic oldtown to see the temples and ruins.
Tuk tuks can be arranged to take you to the long distance bus station, it's a short walk to the bus station that takes you to the old town and motorbikes are available for hire.
And it is super kid friendly
