Prebooking a far in advance gets you cheaper flights on budget airlines but I've a feeling Bangkok Air (which isn't a budget airline) has fixed prices.
You could always fly with a cheaper airline (like Air Asia) to Surat Thani and then get the ferry to Samui, or get an overnight bus or sleeper train to Surat Thani.
