Description: Magmai Homestay and Resort is located some 2 km from the main Highway 1 (Bangkok-Chiang Rai highway) just outside Tak on the main road to Sukhothai. It offers 20 bungalows (500 baht) and 20 hotel rooms (380 baht) in a single-storey block. The hotel rooms have wooden furnishings and are equipped with a television, refrigerator, air-con, hot water and house phone. Clean and well-maintained, there is also free WiFi and breakfast (fried eggs and sausages or khao thom and condiments) is provided free of charge. A restaurant in a garden setting is open until 9.30 p.m. and the theme of the resort throughout is wood, with a loose translation of "magmai" being "wood cloud" (it is in fact pronounced "maek mai")
The receptionist told us we were lucky to get a room, since the resort was full -- but a guest had just cancelled and she recommended booking in advance. The TV offers all the main Thai broadcast channels along with HBO, the Cartoon Channel and ESPN. Our room and bathroom were spotlessly clean and Magmai is truly a bargain -- while prices in the restaurant are also very fair: 40 baht for rice dishes, 5 baht for bottled water and 60 baht for a large Singha Beer.
Getting there: outside Tak there is a major crossroads (traffic lights. From this intersection, proceed for 2-km towards Sukhothai, past a military camp on your left. The resort is on the right-hand side of the road and is easy to spot.
