Has anyone recommend these yet?
I find Bill Bryson's book a joy to read and I've re-read them many times.
He has many titles covering travels (alas, none for Southeast Asia. So I assume he hasn't been to Asia yet).
The Ones I have read:
The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America (1989)
Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe (1991)
Notes from a Small Island (1995) (travels in the United Kingdom, his farewell to the country he was temporarily leaving)
A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (1998) (co-stars Stephen Katz)
Notes from a Big Country (UK) (1998?) / I'm a Stranger Here Myself (US) (1999) (columns about moving back to the USA)
Down Under (UK) / In a Sunburned Country (US) (2000) (travels in Australia)
Bill Bryson's African Diary (2002) (travels in Africa for CARE International, to whom all royalties and profits were donated)
His books are not too thick and I believe quite enjoyable to read while you marvel at the similar circumstances that both of you are facing

wombatfuz, I so love Bill Bryson!!!!! I often travel alone and never take off without a good funny book. I actually brought his books back home and read them again as he is simply brilliant! On my last holiday I found a similar style book about Thailand , Thailand Diaries by Peter Snelson, what a great book! The author has been backpacking around Thailand for years but he does not claim to know or understand everything but his observations are very very funny

Did Bryson write a short history of the world? I read that once and remember it being quite good. Strange I can't remember who wrote it.
