Hey, I am 21yo British male looking for a travel buddy (or two) to go through Vietnam from south to north with. I will have been travelling in SE Asia for 6 weeks with two friends but we are heading off in separate directions for the second half of our trip. Some of the stops in between would be something like Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue and of course Ha Long Bay. Let me know what you think!

Have you thought about doing a tour, or do you want to do it off your own back?

I'm not too keen on the idea of a tour.. although in fairness I haven't looked at any. Have you seen one that looks good?

I am doing a tour just because I am a young female travelling alone...with no sense of direction at all!! Plus I thought it would be a great chance to meet people to share my experience with. I'm doing mine through Gap Adventures I think it's called - I booked it through STA. It's called Roam Cambodia Vietnam and lasts about 20 days - all accom and travel sorted so makes life a lil easier. You should check it out.

I'm travelling the opposite direction in March! Might catch you somewhere around the middle!

hi manners,
how much do these sort of tours cost, i know it all depends, since each one will differ from another, but just an idea... is there a website?
and i guess there all tour packages available for most of SE asia, i'm planning a 3 month back pack trip, and have no sense of direction either...

Hi ryder
My tour cost me $2130NZ for a 20 day tour from Bangkok through Cambodia to Vietnam...includes all accommodation and travel with a tour guide to help you out so it's a good idea if you are travelling alone - if the tour is full there should end up being about 12 of you. I booked mine through STA Travel but I think the tour company is called Gap Adventures - they do all sorts of different tours to different places.
I haven't been on the tour yet - still got two weeks to go so can't judge yet but have heard a lot of good things
Hope this helps

Hi Manners
I'm now in Cambodia already so I think the horse has probably bolted on that tour, hope it is a good one though.
If anybody will be in Phnom Penh in about 10 days from now and is looking for somebody to cross the border (at Chau Doc on the Vietnam side, not sure what the town on the Cambodian side is called...) with let me know.

I did the train stint from Saigon to Hanoi , so got to see some more of Vietnam in passing. I stopped at Hue, Hoi An and Mui Ne on the way down. The train journey was tremendous travel. When you get to Hanoi don't miss the Water Puppet Performance - well worth seeing. I've just put up a post about it. if you want to read it, check it out at

enjoy your trip.
