Reports are coming in that there's been a very large earthquake off the NW coast of Sumatra. Initially estimated as a 8.9 but it's been downgraded to an 8.7. The epicenter is near where the 2004 quake happened and a tsunami warning has been issued.

A French 24 hours news channel here (in west Africa) says that Thailand is evacuating coastal areas on the Andaman side....

Just talked to a small resort owner on Ko Kho Khao (Andaman coast) and he had already received warning. Let's hope no tsunami hits, but if one does hopefully all the warning and evacuation systems put in place after the last one work.

Here's a link to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. They have estimated time of arrival of the wave (if it happens).

In local Thailand time that would have a tsunami arriving Phuket at 18:18 (6:18 PM), Ko Phra Thong at 19:23 (7:23 PM), Ko Tarutao at 19:56 (7:56 PM), but I would not wait around!

    According to our local news:

"Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre issued an evacuation order to residents in six provinces along the country's west coast, including the popular tourist destinations of Phuket, Krabi and Phang-Nga."

I just checked to see what was happening in Banda Aceh. Electricity was down and there was mass panic there (I don't blame them!) but no sign of a big tsunami. They only had a 30cm wave. Apparently the first earthquake was a horizontal plate shift which is less likely to cause a tsunami than a vertical shift.

There's been a big aftershock (M8.2) though and a new tsunami warning has just been issued.
Hopefully that was a sideways quake as well.
