PhuketWan reports that flights into Phuket nosedived by 24.5% compared to February the previous year, with passenger totals tumbling by 22.87%. February's decline was the greatest in five months of continuing negative figures, heightening uncertainty about March and beyond.
The story goes on to say that the great unmentionable is that not only are numbers falling, people are also spending far less, with some indicators pointing towards a spending fall of between 40 and 60% -- hard times for the retail businesses in Phuket. This followed on from official reports released Friday that overall Thailand is looking at a 20% reduction in international tourism year on year. Also in February, the large Thailand-based online reservation agency, Wired Destinations, went broke -- grim times indeed.

Hard times for the tourist industry and the people employed within.Guess the upside for tourists is there should be some good bargains about.
