The Phuket Observer is reporting that Phuket is soon to start running hydrofoil services from Phuket to Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta and the Similans.
Forecast trip time to Phi Phi is 40 minutes and another 20 minutes to reach Ko Lanta. Prices though are not cheap -- comparable to a speedboat service -- say 1,700B to Phi Phi.
No word on when the service would actually commence.

Please explain how giving people a chance for a smooth, fast and safe trip to the Similans would be 'horrible'.
Some just don't enjoy 2 hours of battering the waves.

I can follow you over that fear. It sometimes looks like the 'grab the money' show with little or no thought about the environment.
In this case I'm somewhat optimistic as the Similans are closed from May to October anyway, so no tourist in those 6 months. It's true though there will be more tourists between November and April.
I think and hope the hydrofoil will be running to P.P. in the low season as (if I understand well) there's no problem running with waves lower than 2 meters high.

watson,
I don't mean the "experience" would be horrible. I mean the Similans could end up like every other overtouristed national park such as Maya Bay.
I have no faith in Thailand's ability to manage the environment.
