HI
if i were to turn "data roaming" off and pull the SIM card out of my iphone 3gs, would i be able to pick up wi fi internet when its available? would it operate like an itouch?
anyone try this? it would be nice to have internet access while aboard without having to rely on cafes. are there many free wi fi spots in larger towns? anyone know if the gps works without the sim in?

Yes mate there are stacks of places you can access wifi in SEA, and its getting more prevalent.
In response to your questions about the iphone, yes you can use it as an iphone touch without the sim.
GPS works on the internet connection to download google maps so it wont work unless you are connected to the internet.
Hope this helps
