iPad, 3G or not

    I will be traveling throughout South east Asia this fall and winter. I'm looking to buy and bring an iPad with me to have Internet and keep in touch with back home. Would there be any benefit to getting the 3G option? Or is that just asking for a headache? Not sure how SIM cards and data plans work there. Thanks for the insights.
