Anick-Marie Bouchard explores the reality of solo travel in female shoes, arguing that it is more accessible than people think and promoting an approach based on mental preparation and self-empowerment. - These videos can be useful for men as well.

Women who live in fear will never grow... It's important to be independent and not depend on others. There are even some men who are afraid to travel alone. Life has risks, a woman can be raped or robbed in her own city - If one is so afraid of adventure and risk taking, maybe it's just better they stay home as their insecurities are sometimes a burden on others.

To travel alone as a woman, would mean plenty of concerns to be addressed. Women face greater obstacles when travelling alone, more than men do. Embarking on any kind of journey, the first thought for a woman is – “Will I be safe?” or “Is it okay for me to go there?”
There are a few things that you need to keep in mind when it comes to travelling alone. When travelling alone the first thing you need to know is where you are going and how you are getting there. Based on that there are other points that you need to tick off in my head. First thing is you decided on how you are going to travel, whether it is by plane, train, bus or car. Depending on the time you are reaching, you would need to figure out as to how you are getting to your hotel- a taxi or bus or being picked up by someone. The next thing is always check up on is the kind of hotel you are staying at and where is it located.
When staying in a hotel, make sure you are familiar with the nearest fire exit in case of an emergency. Make sure the locks in your room are secure and that there is safety chain and bolt. Also try to make sure that your room does not have a connecting door to the next room.
When travelling in a place or country that is already known or familiar to you, it’s always easy to lose ones sense of awareness at times, by taking things for granted at times. It’s always good to be aware of one’s surroundings and where or who is next to you. Taking that slight step of being extra cautious always pays off.
Visiting places or countries that you are not familiar with always poses a slightly bigger problem. Language could always be the biggest barrier. When going out for dinner or a drink always keep the name and number of the place you are staying at. Take taxis from a recognized and known company. Try and get a fair amount of directions before stepping out anywhere so you can at least show you sort of know the place.
Let some of your family or friends know where your are travelling to and a possible number where you would be reachable .Always keep your wits about you and go with your gut instinct.

Before I get married, I'll make sure that I've tried traveling to other countries alone. Kudos to all the girls who are not afraid to visit foreign places alone! :)
