can i download guides to my hardrive for free. When i try to do this i am asked for a subsciption to adobe

You should be able to, yes. You'll probably need some kind of pdf reader but not one you need to pay for. Try and download Adobe reader and then try again. Both TF guides and Adobe reader are free.
