A few great tips from our latest trip last month-
Mae Salong has a fabulous guesthouse not in the books- Maesalong Little Home Guesthouse next to Shin Sane GH but much nicer for similar price. Somboon, the owner, is very friendly and accomodating.
Chiang Saen is a bit of a pit, and Gin's GH, recommended in most of the books, is a big pit.

Renting a car, though not cheap, was a fabulous experience for 4 of us ( about 32$USD per day), driving to Chiang Dao, Mae Salomg, golden triangle, Chiang Rai....
In Chiang Mai- Pha-Thai GH was fabulous.
