We made a trip by train and bus with our family (3 children). We had a great time in Thailand. We never felt in danger and people are very helpful. You can see our tripjournal at: http://www.mytripjournal.com/journals/petrouschka/ It's written in French though...
In Bangkok we liked to visit the Snake Farm, Chinatown, and Lumpinipark. We stayed at Lamphu House a great guesthouse next to Kao San road. But you must better make a reservation if you want to have a room! We also loved to visit Lopburi and the monkeys everywhere in the city. Erawan waterfalls is the most beautiful place we've seen and we would have liked to stay more time. We didn't like Chiang Mai much. We didn't like Koh Tao much neither. Too touristic!!!
