There isn't really a train... the nearest choice if you wanted to do part of the trip by rail would be to take the bus to Trang or Hat Yai, then take the train to Butterworth, then take a bus the rest of the way to Penang.
By bus I figure it would take maybe 8 hours total, including the bus stopping at the border and for lunch.

Maybe not such a good idea to catch a train from Trang. It is on a branch line which heads AWAY from Malaysia for quite some distance. Better to travel a bit further to Hat Yai which is on the main Bangkok-Butterworth-KL-Singapore line.
Easiest/cheapest would be to get a minibus right thru - any guesthouse or travel desk in Krabi will sell you a ticket. This usually involves changing minibuses at a travel agent in Hat Yai - all on the one ticket.
You can go all the way by ferry but it is considerably more expensive and time-consuming. Ferry Krabi to Lanta, then Tigerline to Langkawi in Malaysia, then ferry to Penang.

If you took the train to Butterworth you would, of course, take the ferry over to Penang island.
