I.E. do the trains run on time?
On my way back to Da Nang from Hoi An, instead of flying out of Da Nang to Hanoi , I thought about taking the train from Da Nang to Hue so that I can see the beautiful views along the route; and then from Hue fly to Hanoi in the same day.
One thing that is holding back me doing this is the train schedule. There are only 3 non-stop direct flights to Hanoi from Hue so I want to make sure I can make it to Hanoi the earliest as possible, but still see the scenery.
I believe you meant if they keep to their schedule rather than the schedule itself. I'm currently in Nha Trang and I have recent 3 southbound experiences to relate, and I'm sure others will chime in with more longterm trends.
From Hanoi to Hue the train left on time and arrived about 30 minutes late.
From Hue to Danang the train arrived (from Hanoi) about 30 minutes later and arrived only about 20 minutes late. And by the way, I did this portion in a 1st class carriage with seats instead of cabins so I could see both directions. It was scenic but honestly not much different or better than other stretches. There are lovely views on every leg so far.
From Danang to Nha Trang the train left on time and arrived about 15 minutes late.
I've done that trip (and I do think it's pretty special) many times and found it fairly reliable, however I did it last week and it arrived 3 hours late (5 hours late by the time it got to Hanoi). Can't you work in a few days in Hue? It's a beautiful city.
