Sorry, the answer is no, everything goes through Hanoi . Even if you were to hire a private driver, they'd most likely have to go via Hanoi. The Lao Cai train does make a few brief intermediate stops, yes. If you're coming in from Ninh Binh on the train, I believe you have to switch from station A to station B at Hanoi since all trains bound for Lao Cai/Sapa leave from the rear, station B.

Hi,
I was planning my trip in North Vietnam, and was wondering if there is any way to go from Tam Coc to Sapa without having to head back to Hanoi.
Is the overnight train to Sapa stopping anywhere or is it direct?

Agree. There's no direct way to Sapa from Tam Coc. Instead, you need return to Hanoi and board the train from there.
