I have seen this post for a while. If you intend to buy and own a bike to do your trip, you will meet a bit problem with insurance and police if anything happen. There are many bike hire shop in HCMC that you can contact with and they may have parner in Hanoi that you can drop the bike when you get there. Would cost about 10-12 usd/day.
It may work better for you, i hope.
