Hi,
We are planning a 9 day trip to vietnam and cambodia, and would LOVE to help in the planning?
1. What direction shall we travel in (flying in from KL)? Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh city / Saigon - Phnom Penh - Siem Reap or reverse? (i.e. NORTH to SOUTH or SOUTH to NORTH) or would people recommend an alternative route?
2. How do we get between the different places? plane, train or bus?
3. I know its not long enough for a thorough visit - but is 2 days in each place reasonable?
Planning to leave around 18th December.
Thanks a million!

I hate to put downers on travel plans but I'm trying to work out what you are trying to achieve. Tick a piece of paper saying you've been to the places or are you really going to visit and see things?
Hanoi on it's own really needs 3 days. HCMC, 2 days and that isn't including the travel which, even flying will knock out at a minimum, half a day per journey. Indeed you really have no option but to fly if you are hoping to cover these places. The distance from Hanoi to HCMC by air is around 1100km, takes 2 hours. It's a quite a journey from Hanoi centre to the airport anyway, not a 5 minute trip.
Siem Reap could do with 3 days, more would be better. From Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is about 6 hours by road (flying won't be much quicker by the time you've checked in etc).
I would suggest knocking out the North of Vietnam entirely and just do HCMC (Christmas decorations should be up), Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. This way the pace will be better and you will see things and not just a blur through windows. It will still cost you a lot in Visa fees (if you need them). Flying is expensive on those routes anyway. The bus takes about 6 hours from HCMC to Phnom Penh.
