There are dozens of shops in Hoi An selling backpacks - mainly North Face. Are these the genuine article - or is there an easy way to tell If they are genuine? If so, how much should I be paying for a 75+15L pack? I'm looking to buy one to send home, which my hotel is able to arrange.

Those products are either fakes or factory seconds (goods that did not pass quality control). If you check the North Face website, there are no official retail outlets in Vietnam. http://www2.thenorthface.com/ap/store-locations.html There are fakes that are such good copies that it can be difficult to distinguish them from the real thing.
