Hi, I'm 23 from new zealand and flying into HCMC on April 7th and leaving on the 25th. I am planning to travel the length of the country and have a couple of questions..
- do i need to worry about safety given i'm youngish, female and travelling alone in Vietnam?
- should i start and Hanoi and go south? or start in HCMC and go north?
Any advice or help would be awesome! Thaaaanks! Katie.

Hi, i dont think you have anything to worry about, just keep your wits about you and dont go walking down dark alleys at night things like that. As for the north south question i dont think it makes a difference as you'll be seeing the same things either way. Im landing in Hanoi at the begining of april and working my way south.
enjoy

Katie,
We are a family of 3 (way cool mom plus 25 yr old son & 13 yr old daughter) from the US (we've actually been to NZ, mostly the North island) who will be in Vietnam from the end of March through the end of April 2011. We are flying into and out of Hanoi and would be happy to meet up with you. Other than popping over to Luang Prabang mid-month we haven't made any firm plans; we'll get settled in and then decide. Send me a private message if you'd like to keep in touch.

I too will be doing a similar trip.
I'm a young American student as well.
Would love to meet up.

CCella,
I didn't realize I had to set my profile to public to PM, but I've done that now. You have to do the same, I think; there's no PM option in your post.

hi.
u dont have to worry about safety here in vietnam. just need to watch ur steps when u cross the streets and be careful ur luxury items: camera, purse, expensive phone,...
it depends on where u wanna go next after Vietnam. e.g: if u wanna go to Laos next, then u should start from South. but if u wanna go to Cambodia next, u should start from north.
have a great trip!

I am hoping to do something similar in April also - at this stage cycling from Hanoi to HCM (or part thereof)... Was going to do it with an organised tour but now not so sure - dont want to be restricted by an itinery...
Would be good to meet up if you are interested.

Katie, Just read a blog about a young lady who bought a motorbike and did the length of the country without any prboblems. The advice from octopus is good, avoid back alleys and beware of people snatching your bag from a passing motor bike. Think how you would act in Auckland at 3.am on a Sunday morning and youll be fine.

Hi katie,
I think you should arrive in HCM first because there will be an exhibit about tourism take place in the center of HCM city. It will start from 7 April then maybe you will have more ideas about the next destination.

Hi All,
I'm from Australia and my family runs a small restaurant near the airport in Saigon and i'll be there between March 22nd til 9th of April. Stop by if you like Rice paper rolls and we can have a chat. I've been to Vietnam several times and love the scooter experience. PM me if you're interested.
Trek.

Hi All,
I am a 30 year old female from Oxford UK, I will be traveling by myself round South East Asia for six months. I will be flying into Bangkok on 5th April then i plan to fly to either Hanoi or Ho chi min on 7th April, same as some of you. I would like to travel the breadth of the country flying out of either Hanoi or Ho Chi Min (depending which one i arrived in) and leave around 4th May back to Bangkok to get ready to start my volunteering project on Koh Lipe Island on 8th May. I last traveled when i was twenty round Australia but have never done it by myself before so i am a bit concerned and nervous but i guess that is only natural! It would be great if any of you guys would like to hook up!? Its always great to share the experiences.
I look forward to hearing from you very soon.
Sam
