Has anyone recently traveled from Hong Kong (or Guangzhou) to Hanoi on the train? In theory there is a direct train twice weekly, but this has yet to be confirmed.
I would really like to not have to wait and change trains in Nanning, China, as this can add hours onto the already lengthy trip.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Cheers!

You're going to have to change somewhere as only the beiJing >> Ha Noi train does this trip - twice weekly.
But there is a better deal - the BUS.
Leaves twice daily for the border from the Nan Fang Hotel in NanNing and goes to the Friendship Pass (sic) where you get out and struggle through to sets of dead head immigration types and then board a bus to Ha Noi.
Need more bus info? Post it and I will reply.
