I discovered that it is possible to send for a visa by mail, but the application says this:
"Name, address of your contact in Vietnam: (organization or individual)"
Does anyone know if this means I must have a specific place to go initially, and that I cannot just state tourist, or something similar? I have written to the Vietnamese Embassy but have not yet received a response. Thanks, or thanks anyway!
On the UK embassy site form, it states "Name/Address of Contact in Vietnam (if applicable)". So I'm pretty sure you don't have to fill in this section - I certainly didn't when I got my last Vietnam visa whilst in Cambodia. Hope this helps!

Yes, thank you. I learned that the Contact Information space is if you have friends or relatives in Vietnam and therefore can get a visa for longer than 30 days. Also, if someone is doing this in the USA, I was advised to use the San Francisco Consulate rather than Washington, D.C.

To tails101: How did you obtain your Vietnam visa in Cambodia? How long does it take? Are the dates specified the onl dates you can enter and leave Vietnam? Many thanks, redders
You can get a Vietnamese visa from the Vietnamese consulate in Phnom Penh. Normal service is next day, though you can pay more for an express visa (same day) if you apply in the morning. Cost is around US$30.
Sorry I've not replied sooner. It's worth shopping around for your Vietnam Visa when in Cambodia. We managed to got ours for about $22 in Phnom Penh through a travel agent - next day service... Although the visa was actually issued in Sihanoukville - I think the travel agent must have driven there and back to get it!
As for the dates specified on the application form - these are the earliest and latest dates you can enter/leave Vietnam with the Visa - if you go in 5 days after the start date, you'll get in no problems, but only be able to stay for 25 days.
If you need any other info, just yell - and i'll try and reply quicker this time!
