Does anyone know the addresses of the Ocean Tours offices in Hanoi? Someone mentioned there are locations in the Old Quarter and at the Hanoi Backpacker's Hostel but I can't seem to find any exact information. After reading through "Some Real Questions About Halong Bay" it sounds like Ocean Tours are the best but there are 101 ways to get burned!

Hi, from their old website, it's located at 22 Hang Bac street. However, probably the easiest thing is to book it through Hanoi Backpacker's Hostel. You can email or call them (info@hanoibackpackershostel.com). Max and Michael are both very knowledgeable and helpful about the tours.
We went with them in February, and it was great. There wasn't much, if any, of a surcharge for the trip, compared to what other travellers on the same boat who had booked through other venues. We paid $50 per person for a 2 day, 1 night trip, and the pickup was from the hostel which is centrally located anyways.

Ha Long Bay cruises are a hot subject and even hotter when tour operators and travel agents get involved.
For example, one travel agent called Tonkin - in Ha Noi, admits his 'service' charge is simply a 10% markup on top of a cruise price ... which is pretty steep considering it takes 5 minutes and a local telephone call.
The best way to get a cruise is to book with THE BOAT OWNER two of which are Emeraude and Tropical Sails < http://tropical-sails.com >.
Most of the Tour Ops, for instance Handspan, use the word "our" when in actual fact they don't even own a bota let alone a decent cruise ship.
Be smart - unless you have money to waste - book directly and avoid the travel agent rip-off's.

Ocean Tours head office is in the old quarter @ 22 Hang Bac St. Their phone# is 84-4-926 04 63, fax# 84-4-926 05 02. Just returned from Vietnam & used them for both Halong Bay ( 3 days 2 nights ) & Sa Pa ( 3 days 4 nights. Both tours were $114.00 ea. Included all transportation & meals. We were very happy with the service & the meals were fabulous. They own their own boat & island with bungalows on the beach & have a variety of options to choose from.
