I want a small group since I'm alone and would like to travel with others for a few days. The best kind of tour would combine hotel and homestay accommodation. I've been Googling for many many sessions, and now I'm tired of getting nowhere!

You could organise something like that off your own back on arrival in Sapa -- or Hanoi for that matter. You'll find booking something once there in person, rather than beforehand online will get you a better price. No shortage of places to meet other travellers both in Hanoi and Sapa. To get to sapa, the night train is by far the most popular route.
