I will be heading to Vietnam in late september. Wanted to post my itinerary (not set in stone) and see if anyone has any suggestions, etc. Here goes:
2 days HCMC
3 days Ben Tre (Homestay/Canals/Biking)
2 days Can Tho
1 day Chau Doc
travel day - boat to Phnom Pen
2 full days Phnom Pen (more days here/sufficient?)
1 day travel to Siem Reap
7 full days Siem Reap & surrounding areas
fly to Luang Prabang
3 full days Luang Prabang
Fly to Hanoi
2 days Hanoi
3 days Halong Bay boat trip
4 days Sapa
1 day in Hanoi after Sapa
Fly to Hue (3 days total)
3 days in Hoi An
fly to Ho Chi Minh City - 2 full days here, then fly home.
I will be flying from city to city, to save a bit of time. Want to see as much as possible, but not at a frenetic pace. Thinking of dropping Luang Prabang for now, if anything. I wouldn't be so regimented with my days, but it seems like some of the better guesthouses are getting booked up in Siem Reap, i..e some of my trip needs a little planning, not necessarily the whole thing. Thoughts?
I think it looks quite reasonable really, esp since you plan to take a few flights. Only consideration - you will need to visas for Vietnam (or multi-entry?). That's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things though.
In Cambodia you've allowed only days in PP which is adequate to see the main sites - but because you've allowed a good 7 days in SR, it will be easy enough to extend that if you find you want to spend more time there. That's the ideal way to plan - allow yourself flexibility to change things as you go.

You could have saved a few bucks by buying an open jaw ticket, saving also on your VN visa because you wouldn't have needed multiple entry that way (into HCMC/Hanoi and out of PP or Siem Reap)
Hi,
I would agree that you should drop Luang Prabang. You are not really seeing Laos and it will cost a visa for 3 days. Talking of visas, it is illogically (Mr Spock) to re-enter Vietnam twice and if multiple entry is not available (not sure on that one) otherwise you will pay twice for a visa. Try to arrange your trip to visit Vietnam one time, ie do Cambodia first. Can you not fly into Siam Reap or PP and then travel from PP to Can Tho by boat? Maybe your flights into Vietnam are fixed, I don't know.

Hey Mike,
I did decide to drop Luang Prabang for now. I figure that someday I would like to see Laos proper, so I'll save it for then. As far as visa - I do have a multiple visa, so no problem. No flights within Vietnam as of yet, I may do that on the fly as I move along.

As you grow older, you'll find the only things you regret are the things you didn't do.

Thanks,
I never heard of an open jaw ticket until right now. I will have to look that up.
