I'm wanting to do some writing while I'm in Vietnam and I noticed a lot of Hanoi hostels & guest houses offering free wifi. Is there any reason that I shouldn't bring my laptop. What do you think?

None whatsoever, as long as the computer can handle 220V .
There are plenty of open WiFi systems as well as many in restaurants and cafes.
If you bring DVDs / CDs carry them on your person when passing through incoming customs - they rarely check peoples pockets although they X-ray baggage.
