I am currently in Hanoi. I arrived since 6 days ago and stayed at Real Darling Cafe/Guesthouse, located on Hang Quat St. I checked out of the guesthouse this morning due to a shocking incident that happened.
To make the long story short, i caught the young caretaker of the guesthouse peeping into my room, thru my slightly opened window with curtains drawn. I noticed a shadow coming from the curtain and i almost stopped breathing-just to see what was going to happen next. I saw his fingers tried to pull the corner of one curtain very slightly so he could look into the room!! I went mad, held on to my swiss knife, opened the door and screamed at him. He ran away. Immediately,I packed my bags and left. When i came out of my room with my bags, he knelt down outside my room and begged me not to tell his boss. I was in rage and he starting to cry in fear. I still don't know if i did the right thing though, I paid at the reception and left the place soonest i can.(without telling the ladyboss what happened, even when she asked why I wanted to leave.) I hate to make anyone loose his job, it could be very important to him or his family. But I am still traumatised, and i decided to write this word of caution for all ladies travelling alone.
However, let me be fair by saying that the rooms at Real Darling, although very basic, the rooms from third floor onwards are quite charming in its own way. For 6USD, the rooms are equipped a double bed, private bathroom and tv with many channels. The environment has a bright courtyard(sort of) with flowers growing on the poles, where one has to pass by, in order to use the nice staircase up the rooms.
It is really a pity that such has to happened to me! This is so unfortunate! It's a lesson. Solo travelling ladies, please take care and be cautious.

Hey Mia,
Sorry to hear this.
I wonder too, however, if you did the right thing by not reporting this guy to the ladyboss. If this is what really happened, this guy is still there, free to try this again on someone else, right? In other words, he got away with it.
At the same time, you've written up something encouraging people not to stay at a particular place? You didn't give the ladyboss the opportunity to set things right, but what you have written could potentially hurt her business. It seems like you might be punishing the wrong person.
Maybe too, you could include these comments in the feedback section for this guesthouse under the Hanoi listings. Regards.

I am now (01.05.2011) here, using Iphone.
Everybody please notice, this Real Darling Café is a very dangerous partner for Your trip.
They left us on a island without transport and were forcing me to pay extra money to get on mainland.
8 people during the trip were absolutely disguested about them.
If You are in this Area - Go to the ocean hotel - it is 100m from them and it is cheaper for the trips and much much much more comfirtable for staying.!!!!!!
