For bus routing off the 'OpenTour' trip you usually have to resort to 'local' buses - which are usually in better mechanical shape than the OT buses - which depart EARLY in the day from the local bus station (Ben Xe Ha Tien; 3 Tran Quoc Toan).
Best to get your hotel to assist obtaining a ticket the day before - some local buses have different price schedules for foreigners!
If you are headed for Phu Quoc, please take a proper passenger ferry and NOT a fishing boat looking for extra cash. Several fishing boats have sunk, complete with their tourist cargo, and one notable one involved a loss of 28 people.
Water travel between Rach Gia and Phu Quoc is also determined by weather conditions.

One thing - MAI LINH now has a bus service running this route - they are really good buses and drivers.
This is the same company that runs De Luxe, VN and numerous other taxi companies and it has a standard price list with drivers who are actually trained.

Hi catBa.
Thanks for you info, you mentioned MAI LINH bus station is it at BENH EX bus station? and is it over the bridge? also do you know what times?
We are actually travelling from KEP in CAMBODIA across the border to HA TIEN on a Monday, we have a flight (already booked) for PHU QUOC for Tuesday dep at 8am. we dont want to hang around HA TIEN bus station, as we want to get to RACH GIA to find a hotel for the night, and look around, any more information would be appeciated.

ML has offices in both towns and representatives at the bus stations (might have been upgraded to offices by now). Ask around for the precise office info.
Or you could contact Mai Linh directly in HCMC at: Tel: (0)-8-829-8888 or e-mail: < ml@mailinh.vn >. Teir web site lacks useful English information.
I am presently in the boonies where there is no cell signal (even Vinafone doesn't cover the whole of VietNam) and I only have a portable satellite InterNet terminal.
Hope this helps.
