thismay seem like a strange request... but i've never travelled anywhere that doesn't sell bars of laundry soap (much more efficient and less messy than powder/liquid). i can't find it here in cambodia but am headed for vietnam soon - is it available there or should i get a friend to bring a stash when she visits?
cheers

You can get both bar soap and detergent (washing powder) - the latter in small bags costing around VND3000 and up to really large bags.
Both are available from convenience stores and markets.
Other things you might be curious about are toothpaste (including an unusual flavour of Green Tea), mosquito repellent (Sofella - comes in two sizes and is a pleasant smelling cream). Note (for females) only pads are commonly available - tampons only in 'Western' style supermarkets in larger centres.
No need to load down your friend with non-essentials!
