hello all.
we'll arrive to Hanoi on Feb 2 and would like to take the train to Hoi An the following day or so. i contacted several travel agencies. only 1 replied suggesting that everything is sold out in that period.
anyone out there with good ideas/better info?

Bad luck! Your holiday plans have met the big Tet Holiday crush. Duong Sat have added tens of extra long haul trains but all have been sold out for ages as Vietnamese all prepare to travel to their familial homes, just as Westerners do at Christmas.

Your ONLY alternative (air is booked solid, too) is ROAD.

The safest are Sinh, Mei Linh and Hoang Long. (The WORST are Camel/T.M. Brothers, Trekking Travel, Hahn Cafe and Vung Thanh).
