Your starting point would the city of DONG HA which is about an hour north of HUE. You can travel from Hue easily using various bus operations - local or tourist - or by rail. If you wonder why vehicles travel slowly between Hue and Dong Ha you can thank the highway police who are zealously using their laser speed traps to catch the heavy footed drivers.

A taxi, or better still a local bus, will run you up to the coast, from Dong Ha, where the Vinh Moc tunnel complex is located. They are right on the sea and lie north of the Ben Hai River which has a impressive war memorial and roadworks are nearing completion. This is worth a brief stop over.

The Tunnel complex is now a tourist location with ticketing at the gate and numerous vendors hawking the usual foodstuffs and trinkets. Toilets are available (VND1,000).

TIP: TAKE A FLASHLIGHT.

Traveling independently without the 'benefit' of a tour group allows you to take your time and explore the tunnels which are far more genuine than the circus at Cu Chi.

Should you wish to stay overnight, you will find a fishing village a kilometre or so south of the Tunnels where there is a selection of accommodation and you can get decent seafood, too.
