If we're talking about Hanoi, it's not quite that easy! I flew into Hanoi from Hue, and expected my hotel to pick me up, but they were quite late, so I priced transportation. In the terminal I was quoted quite outrageous prices (dong equivalent of $18. to $32.) The hotel man finally showed after 45 min., but my name was not on the card (he took me anyway!) My guesthouse charged $12. $14. is not a bad price at all.

Yes, I just had a reply to a reservation request from Tung Trang Hotel. They're offering to pick me up at the airport for 240,000 VND ($14.60 at the moment)and claiming standard cab fare from the airport is $14+. Should I take them up of try to find a better fare at the airport. (I know dithering over $3 seems silly, but I'm trying to get into the mindset of not being an easily suckered tourista for my coming trip.)
Well, the answer is "NO". Due to the high inflation, taxi drivers now don't bother taking people to town with that amount of money. Pay 5$ more and you get it.

Why a taxi? It is easy, cheap and ride in comfort if you take the local bus. We did it both in HCMC and Ha Noi. The locals riding the bus helped us get off at the right location and we made friends with them in the process.

From what i understand, the airport taxi charges a flat rate of US$10 to anywhere in the old quarter. Is this still accurate?
The hotel i've booked with have offered to send a taxi to fetch us, but they're charging US$14.

As far as I know $10 is still the going rate from the airport.

The hotel takes around $3 commission for arranging the taxi. I have seen what they pay the taxi driver!
