I'm looking at 3 -4 days in both Sapa region and Luang Prabang area.
Am I better off booking before I go or self guiding when there other than transport and hotels?
I've been given one package price of $2600 which seems high.

Without knowing exactly what the package includes it's difficult to comment much on value, but unless it includes all your accommodation in five star hotels, that's a very very expensive package.
See our Sapa section for some suggestions on trekking -- for a basic trek, rates start at around US$15 a day per person.

am I perhaps better off booking my own flights, HCMC-LP-Hanoi and the train and hotels. Then find local guides?
Sapa I'd like to see (suggestions welcome):
Ban Ho with a homestay
market in Bac Ha or Sunday Muong Hum Market
CatCat village
CanCau market
river ride on either Hong or Chay
some trekking

I also wonder if a daylight drive up the road from Hanoi to Lao Cai is worth it over the overnight train?
