We are planning our first trip to Vietnam at the end of this year. We will be in Vietnam from about December 22- January 12. I know this is one of the peak times, so we were wondering how difficult it is to book hotels/transport around this time. Any advice is very welcome!!

Depends on your budget, but if you're looking at backpacker/flashpacker style places and are willing to do a little legwork when you arrive to find a room, then no real need for a reservation.
If you're planning on going to Sapa be sure to book your trains tickets as soon as you arrive in Hanoi.

Unless you're travelling in peak season, you should be able to book train tickets elsewhere in the country a day or so in advance (just to be safe) or show up on the day and cross your fingers.
