Will be travelling overland in late Dec 08

I have figured out the first leg of HCMC/Dalat/Nha Trang from the forum, all these are doable in short journeys within 6 hours by open bus.

From Nha Trang to Hoi An, would it be preferable to take an overnight train versus bus, what is the schedule and relative cost ?

What is the recommended hotel at Hoi An ?

What is the preferred accomodation for Hoi An, an alternative to

Mai Linh Express has new buses and there are several departures daily to Da Lat which means you can enjoy seeing the countryside as you travel.
Journey time is 6 hours.

Likewise, the Da Lat >> Nha Trang trip is about 2.5-3 hours.

The best way to travel from NHA TRANG to HOI AN is to take a TRAIN to DA NANG then a bus to Hoi An. Hoi An isn't on the rail line.

There are economy hotels all around the bus offices so you will have no trouble locating a bed.

Hi CatBa2,
I have a similar question to Hunter's but reverse. I, with a hubby, want to travel from Nha Trang to Dalat, back to Mui Ne and then to HCMC by bus. I have not found a site to show possible routes. Do you know if we can do it directly or do we have to change busses between Dalat and Mui Ne? Do you recommend open tour busses or express busses? Thanks for your advice and expertise, it helps a lot.

Is there also a Mai Linh Express from
Nha Trang to Hoi An, or do I have to take a Open Tour
if I opt by bus ?
I hv checked the train schedule, it takes 10 hours
to reach Danang. I then hv to switch to a bus from Danang to Hoi An. Wouldnt it be more convenient for me to take a direct bus from Nha Trang to Hoi An, I read that it takes 11 to 12 hours ? granted, it is probably more comfortable and safer by train.

The best schedule by train is SE6 depart 20:18
and arrive 05:38 ?

For longer jaunts, train wins out -- it's more comfortable, safer and affordable. The bus is more convenient in that it's a point to point service, but having done it both ways, would recommend the train. Da Nang is a good spot anyway -- factor in an overnight stay there if you can.

Since the train arrives very early in Danang, how
long would you need to wait before getting transport
to Hoi An ?
Would it make sense to stay overnight first in Danang
before moving down to Hoi An ?
Is it true that all open bus will still stop in Danang
on the way to Hue or Hoi An ?

I wouldn't expect any problem getting early morning transport from Nha Trang station to Hoi An.

Da Nang is an interesting town -- the Cham Musuem is a must-see -- but it comes down to how much time you've got. One option would be to hang out in Da Nang for breakfast, see the Museum when it opends and then get transport down to Hoi An -- you should be there by lunch.
