I just returned from the travel clinic who told me that Sapa was a malaria risk area.
Can anyone confirm or give stories of the mosquitoes?
Thanks

We've got a story here on malaria-risk in SE Asia.
Generally I suggest you're better off taking non-medicinal approches (use DEET repellent, mosquito net, mozzie coils, dress sensibly and don't sleep naked in a swamp) than buy up big on malaria pills.

Malaria is a serious health risk and shouldn't be taken lightly. If you think you are going to an area that has some risk, don't take chances. Seeking advice from a qualified health practitioner is preferable to trolling the website for advice.
Ask your doctor about Doxycycline. It is a cheap alternative to other expensive medicines. The side effects are on the minor side (sun sensitivity, diarrhea).
The CDC site (Center for Disease Control) has some useful information: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/Vietnam.aspx
