Local buses are possible, but the times are not always convenient. Taxis are relatively cheap - it will cost around 350,000 VND which is around $20 US. Taxis can take 4 people so it works out to be relatively cheap per person.
Also consider joining with others and hiring a small bus between you as most people flying in to Danang or arriving by train are on their way to Hoi An .
Third possibility is having your Hoi An hotel collect you. But be sure to negotiate the price first. Most will respond to email and this is usually easier for everyone as the standards of written English exceed the speaking abilities of local staff.

Bus? Train?
How long does it take?

Thank you very much
